A major conflict or struggle can be the main point of the book, a major problem (internally or physically) one of the characters is having, someone not knowing what the best thing to do in a certain situayion, etc.
When your question goes on to say "why is this a significant aspect of the novel?" it means, how does the problem that you named and described affect the book ,the characters, the character main goals or objectives, and/or the main point of the book?

Major conflict in a plot can come in a number of ways. It might be something the protagonist (main character) faces that presents a challenge. It might literally be a conflict with another character in the plot. It might be a difficult decision he or she must make. In any case, a major conflict is something that is typically resolved, solved, settled or in some way "put to rest" by the conclusion of the novel.
Conflict or struggle is significant to a novel because it often provides a means for building toward a peak or climax before the end of the story. Conflict also often provides a means for growth or development in the characters of the story and a means for the author to demonstrate their characteristic strengths and weaknesses. Good Luck.

Do you understand what the words "conflict" or "struggle" mean? How about "significant" or "aspect?"
If you don't understand these words, look them up online at Refdesk.com or www.dictionary.com
Then go back...and look at the question. Does it make sense now?
If you don't understand an important word in a sentence, you should look it up and get used to doing so. Just because a word seems like it is a "big word" doesn't mean you can't handle it or get a grip on it. Try to provide some context for yourself by looking it up and seeing how it is used in another sentence as well as getting the definition. That helps you put it into your own words.
I'm not trying to be a jerk here, but I really believe the saying, "give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Teach a man to fish and he will eat for a lifetime."
If you start teaching yourself this process, you will be less dependent on random people on Yahoo Answers (with their varying levels of intelligence, expertise, and knowledge).

What your teacher is looking for is for you find and describe something major that happened in the book. Where characters where fighting, trying to overcome something, to conquer something, to reach some settlement of a crisis, etc. Your teacher than wants you to explain why this was an important part of the book. As long as you can justify your choice of conflict/struggle with your explanation it does not matter if you pick just the perfect example. They are looking that you read and understand the book.
Hope this helps.

In every story there needs to be some sort of conflict. It could be man vs. man where a character has a problem with another character. Man vs. nature where man must survive against nature. Man vs himself where man deals with some internal problems. Often there are several conflicts within a story. In every instance however the character that succeeds in the struggle often learns something or becomes stronger in some way. Without knowing the story its hard to be specific.

It is just asking why a certain conflict in the book is important to the outcome of the book. Example: The Union wins the Civil War, it is important because it brings the country back together.

From what I can gather, it means you need to write a description of a part of the book where there was an event that stuck out (such as a fight, a war, a death, etc.) that changed the course of the story or the relationships of the characters in the story.

Most stories are about the main character's struggle. Meaning, the main character wants something, but can't get it. Why?
Why is this a significant aspect?: Well, in the character's journey to get whatever it is that he or she wants, does he or she learn anything? Meet somebody? Get something?

what is happening in the book? what are the main characters trying to overcome? What are they trying to find out? and then why is this so important to the charcaters? Does it show the characters a moral? Do they learn something?
The major conflict in the Bad Beginning is Count Olaf and how the orphans are trying to get away from him and trying to find their parents and finding a new caretaker

A conflict means some thing that two people or groups are contesting, fighting over. It doesn't have to be physical--it can be a mental or emotional conflict.
