We've only had antibiotics for 70 years. When antibiotics were first put into use, no antibiotic resistant bacteria were known. Today around 7% of the bacteria found in hospitals are resistant to one or more antibiotics. The selection pressure of antibiotics have selected for bacteria that can survive them, this results in a larger percentage of each generation having the new trait.
