What is the origin of the Castillo de San Marcos?

Question

I need stuff about it origin, basically, just who created it and what its purpose was and what it was used for and what happened there. Did Juan Ponce de Leon make it or something, because I see a lot of credit towards him, but it doesn't say anything about it in the books.
