The correct name is Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. When offered, the BBC bought the UK rights and demanded the name be changed as they thought the word "Ninja" had violent connotations. The makers eventually came up with "Hero" to replace "Ninja", which made the BBC happy. They also changed the theme music.
More evidence that Auntie Beeb believes we can't think for ourselves.

IN europe(or ireland where i am) it was always teenage mutant hero turtles for the cartoon, as far as i recall the movie was "ninja", In the US it was teenage mutant ninja turtles which was the original name given by its creators.. It was called "T..M..hero turtles" in europe to emphasise tht they were good and not just ninjas so the kids wouldnt go mad doing random ninja things that werent for a good cause(or somethin like that - in any case it was probably unnecessary...)

According to Wikipedia: "The show was renamed Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles when originally shown in the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland because British censors considered the show's original title to have too violent connotations and the Irish censors usually just go along with what the British censors do. Changes have been done to reflect this, such as changing "Splinter taught them to be ninja teens" to "Splinter taught them to be fighting teens." The intro was also edited, using alternative scenes or freeze-frames in place of Michelangelo using his nunchucks. The movies and 2003 series are however now known in the UK by the international name. This led to a titular distinction between the 1987 series and the 2003 series."
So it depends on where you're from.

It's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. I'll tell you the truth, I like the ones from the '80s and '90s better. They loved that pizza! My favorite was Michaelangelo. Writers nowadays are losing ideas and remaking things too much.
