an eating disorder??

I went to my doctor about 6 mths ago with bulimia and depression, she passed of the bulimia saying i would grow out of it. I don't know if I actually have an eating disorder now or if it's serious, i do make myself sick quite a lot or starve myself..so i suppose i do. what should i do now though? will i grow out of it or should i try to seek further help? I am in denial that i am doing myself any damage or that i REALLY have an Eating disorder??

any advice??

I have had an eating disorder in the past and it definitely sounds like you have one. You DO NOT grow out of eating disorders, they are very complex and they need working through.

Unfortunately the nhs and most doctors know very little about them and don't know how to or have the resources to deal with them. I had a similar experience with my doctor, luckily my parents were brilliant and were able to go private to get the counselling that i needed.

I think it is brilliant that you are acknowledging that you might have a problem, you have half the battle won already. I think you need to go back to the doctor or see a new one for a second opinion and see if you can get a referral to someone more specialist in this area. Maybe try the nhs helpline as they may have more information.

I will also give you a link to the eating disorders association who should also be able to help you. It is really important to do this as soon as possible else the grip of the eating disorder will get stronger. I was in denial myself and it took my friends and family to make me see it. You dont have to feel like this anymore, you can ignore the problem but it doesnt go away it just gets worse. speaking as someone who has been there, i can promise you there really is a better life out there after an eating disorder.

I hope you can get the help that you deserve.

I think that it is irresponsible of the doctor to simple shrug off an eating disorder by simply saying that you "will grow out of it" as if it's something passé.

Maybe try and get a second opinion from another doctor. If not treated properly a small eating disorder can turn into a large eating disorder and a big problem over the long term.

Try doing some internet research on bullimia yourself and see how you can make first steps on your own, whilst simultaneously pushing back on your doctor and pointing out that things have been the same for 3 years.

Nobody wants to see you hurt yourself and I'm quite sure that your family and friends will support you in any way they can - talk to someone you trust.

I really hope things turn out well for you. Good luck and take care of yourself.

You will NEVER grow out of an eating disorder and i,m shocked that ANY doctor would tell you such -have you actually been diagnosed with this?? ALL eating disorders "begin" for a reason -and are deep rooted psychologically -please visit another GP and once diagnosed you will get the help you need -it takes a very long time though and you are never really 100% cured ; i know as i,ve been there with anorexia ..yet it took my being faced with very extreme professional care and eventually accepting it ,before i would even admit i was ill and during my "treatment" a "pandora,s" box was "opened" being the cause of my disorder;(
But i gradually began to eat and went from 5 stone to 8 -perfect for my height ,but after all these years do still have "bouts" when told i,ve put weight on ..though look well for it -this triggers me off but thankfully have never dropped to just 5 stone again and when i look at pics of how i was i,m shocked to see my bones stick out etc ..please ,please see a good gp who will get you the best of care /help ..there are a lot out there ...good luck ..

if you're making yourself sick and starving yourself, something's wrong - see another doctor or nurse, and take someone with you to ensure you are treated fairly.

teenage girls with these sorts of disorders are quite often overlooked as attention seeking, especially if they have identified the problem themselves.

you need to discover the source of the problem and sort it out - your gp can't do this for you, you need to do it yourself, with the help of a supportive family, and maybe a counsellor to - this your gp can arrange for you, but you may find it easier, quicker, and more productive to find a private counsellor (which you'll have to pay for, but they're worth it)

the biggest step is recognising you have a problem, which you already have - the rest won't be easy, but you can do it. hang in there kid, and look after yourself

you do need help but you are not mental go see your doctor about treatments that might help everyone needs help with problems so why shouldnt you before it gets worst or if you dont want to explain to your doctor look at the phone numbers in agoney aunt magazines where people write in to tell there problems it might be something in the past for you to have this. rose quartz helps you get that from new age stores but speak to someone about this you are a wonderful person and dont let this get you down

Go and see another Doctor. The one you saw did not give you proper advice. If left untreated both the depression and bulimia will compond to a stage where it will be untreatable.

this is a psychological issue that definitely needs to be dealt with.!
what on earth is the matter with your g.p. ?

i am very much aware of the reasoning and severe implications associated with bulimics. insist that your g.p. refer you for therapy to deal with this immediately !

before the damage really grabs hold and is irreversible !
