My hamster just died. How do you think I should cope with this?

I've never had a hamster, but about 3 weeks ago I lost my first horse, a 23 yr old Arabian mare. I had her for almost 7 yrs, and it was the worst day of my life. She had liver failure, chronic i think, and we were forced to put her down. it is still hard to go on, thinking about all the great memories we had, but time heals, slowly. very slowly. i found a poem that made me cry, but really helped. it is called the rainbow bridge.

they say that up there, time is different. so 80 years down here could be an hour to them. they WILL NOT forget you. read the bible, jeremiah helps. all in all, just try to get on with life. it is harder than hell, but it helps to stay busy.
Don't be afraid to cry, it helps too. Bury the remains. That is hard to watch with a horse, as a back hoe and to come out and, well, I don't really want to talk about it. But if you have good memories with your pet (I really can't relate, but I have had sooo many amazing times with my horses), and just pray. You will meet your pet again.

The loss of any pet is heartbreaking. I hope you were able to bury him/her. We bury all our pets, even the fish. Only you will know when and if it's time to get another one. Don't get one that looks like that one though. You've taken the first step by sharing with us about you loss and that's good. Grieving is just part of the natural healing process. A good cry can help too. Do you know how old your hamster was? We have lost 2 of our hamster in the last 5 weeks, they were brother and sister, dieing exactly 4 weeks apart, 1/11 and 2/8/07. So it's only been 5 days since the sister died. They were our oldest dwarfs. They would have been 2 in May. The 9 dwarfs we have still are theirs and their mates offspring. Both mates died last year, one in December, the other back in the summer. They both were the sweetest little ones I ever saw and I miss them very much. Typing this makes me sad, but they both died of cancer and I know they're in a better place without pain and knowing that makes me feel better.. I believe that once one dies, even animals, all will be reunited and be together forever. I'm 40 so I've got a lot of animals waiting for me.

First thing scream loud really loud to let your emotions out. Then think was it your fault. Tell yourself its the way of life.
And lastly dont get a hamster. It'll remind you more of your hamster get a gini pig or something else. A rabbit or any other exept a hamster.

-----Bury the remains in the back yard, so he will always be with you. Get a new hamster, perferably a relative of your pet. Make a donation in his name to the local ASPCA; buy a brick there with his name on it, so that people will know he passed this way. Realize that everything is only here for a little while; in the fullness of time, all pass on, germs, mountains, everything. ---Jim

Buy a new hamster that looks different. Don't buy one that looks like your old one because that will keep you sad. Or, you could always buy another type of animal instead!
