I know that at least some publishers actually have submission guidelines on their web sites. Arthur Levine Books has one - see the link in my sources.
HarperCollins does not accept unsolicited manuscripts except for their Avon Romance books. They recommend that you get a book called "Literary Marketplace" from your local library or bookstore to find an agent.
Scholastic does not accept unsolicited manuscripts for children's books either. They recommend getting a recent issue of "Children's Writer's and Illustrator's Market."
Science Fiction Writers of America has a page of advice for preparing your manuscript. Use the link below. I found this and several other web sites with ideas when I did a Google search for "how to submit a manuscript."

Steel:
There are many publishers out there and believe me, it is hard to find one. I spent two years and many, many manuscripts sent with only three replies to the negative. One took three years to reply? Just type in (Canadian) USA or English Literary Agency's and try some of these. If your work is excepted there are no charges to you. They will give you upfront $ and a percentage on books sold. Usually about 15%. Best selling authors can demand much, more. Good luck.
I went the self publish route. Very hard row to hoe. It worked for me only because I am retired and had time to do many book signings.
I write this mainly to warn you about the bad guys out there trying to take your money for nothing. Check (Warnings &Cautions for Writers) May save you some headaches.

i have continually needed to faster or later submit some thing. i can not even say why because i'm no longer even particular why. i began interpreting at the same time as i grow to be six, and positioned it magical. From then on, I knew that is what i needed to do. I do write for myself. each and every note and personality action is my personal, and if i don't like it, i eliminate it. for sure ultimately i prefer to be a marvelous author for myself correct-rated, I do basically prefer to percentage it with the international. My associates and kinfolk are not fairly interesting in interpreting, they might basically study it because that is mine, and not in any respect because they chosen it. no matter if I printed some thing, i'd nonetheless be pleased with it. because both way I placed my heart and soul into it. i'm aggressive. exceptionally with myself. at the same time as i understand i can do some thing, I do it. i do not fairly view publishing as a contest, yet more beneficial of a marvelous mission. and that i have challenged myself. i trust like because the publishing market is so aggressive, it is a marvelous honor to be printed. i want objectives to paintings in route of. they initiate small. From get the idea, write the first financial ruin, write ten chapters, end the e book, rewrite the e book, edit the e book, rewrite again, etc. And after all that exertions is finished and the e book is as ideal as i can make it, it may well be the most suitable next mission to bypass the subsequent step and attempt publishing. for sure i do not aspire popularity and fortune, writing hardly ever brings both. I basically prefer to percentage this variety of magic that grow to be shared with me when I discovered to study and got here upon what yet another mind's eye ought to educate me.
