well i have what is called double depression that is a kind that will never leave .
i know doing something fun is a great place to start. drugs work from the doc . and sex helps too. not that i am getting laid that went off on a trip too so i have now almost nothing to look forward too.
i do know that something as simple as watching a comedy you like and laughing is very helpful.
go to any and every fun thing you can . as stupid as it sounds buy a lottery ticket at least with that there is a billion to one chance of a new sort of life . it helps me.
here is another thing to do works for me every time go to a pet store or some place that has puppies and play with them hold them i believe not one person can be sad and hold a healthy puppy.
meds. sure . different kinds of doctors sure.
forcing yourself to do things you know are fun vital.
if you want to talk to someone who knows what this is like and is in the same boat as you write me i am sitting in the sh@t boat now.

You really can not make yourself stop from being depressed.

However you can eliminate some of the things which surround you and aid your depression. For example:

1.Go for a vacation away from the cold or rain.

2.Quit listening to depressing music. Listen to some reggae or classic rock or happy blues and jazz etc..

3.Get out of the relationships making you depressed

4.Watch Carlos Mancina or Dave Chappelle on the comedy channel.

5.Get a dog or cat.

6.Call your loved ones/family etc if that makes you feel good. Maybe they are the problem.

7.Make someone happy by helping some one less fortunate
.
8.Learn a good joke and practice and tell it to some one. That works great for me.

9.Get some antidepressent drugs from a doctor. They work well for me.

10.Do not indulge in downers such as alcohol, opiates or tranquilizers. They all cause depression. Pot and stimulants are OK.

Hope this all helps. I spent a good part of my life in depression but broke through it and haven't had any relapses in about 15 years some very stress full. Of course my happy pills work well.

ONLY YOU CAN BREAK OUT OF THE FOG, only you.

depression is a cognitive disorder, the only way to help it is by altering cognitive function

do things that keep your mind off of depression, and try to avoid movies that portray sad people, it will seem appealing, but it's not good to watch it

what one believes of himself/herself almost completely reflects their opinion of how others perceive them. talk to friends, hang out with people; if you have social anxiety, try talking to people online
