Basically what your son needs is the package that comes with a case, headphones and cleaning cloth, charger, and a memory stick (which he will want to upgrade to at least a 1 Gig). If you don't have a USB cable that will fit the PSP pick up one of those as well.
The $199 system does not come with games. The $259 and up comes with games etc..
Games can be bought for as low as 14.99 at various retailers like best buy comp usa..
Also Get a screen protection guard (thin sheet that fits on the screen. This will reduce injury to the screen.
All psp can go wifi net surfing, After upgrades they all can view videos, play Mp3's, and store and view photos etc...

just the psp its self cost 199.99 but then u can get a bundle that comes with a case, and a memory stick that is like 250.00.. some places have psp's that come with games but they r like $300 good luck buying

Get your son a book. here's my favorites. Starship Troopers by Heinlein, Farenheit 451 by Bradbury, 1984 by Orwell, Foundation series by Asimov. After that get him a football. This way he won't turn into a fat brainless slob with no girlfriend.

If you son is active in taking things apart and hacking into things, then you want to get him the Version 1.50 Japanese system so he can do his own thing with it.

I wouldn't do it.
Seriously, it's losing support from game developers and it is on it's way out.
People generally just use it to play pirated games and digital porn.
