Act Bell Curve

Both tests use the same methodology.

Prior to being administered, a trial test is given to a group of HS Seniors and a bell curve applied to the score. If this group should some how all be geniuses, then you could imagine how hard that test will be, but a lot of statistics are applied to be sure that this group gives a random, thus normal result for the average HS Senior. The raw score on the trial test is fitted to a bell curve, and from this comes the conversion factor that "calibrates" raw scores on the official test. It also insures that reported test scores are comparable from year to year so that colleges don't have to keep re-writing their entrance standards.

Therefore when you take the test, you get credit for how you score against this normalized standard. This is important as many of the people taking the final test are geniuses and could easily skew the results.

The act is scored in the same way as the SAT is - that's what someone once told me.
