Basically Naruto beats him, and offers his hand in friendship because he knows what Gaara is going through with being an outcast, so he offers Gaara friendship so he doesn't have to feel alone anymore.

Well, Naruto beats him in a fight and somehow he starts thinking about caring to other people and protecting the village. He also doesn't want to be someone making everyone in the village scared because of his shukaku. So his shukaku would be usefull to protect and since he's protecting the village, if he want to protect the village he must be became good.

naruto whooped his *** in a fight and afterwards said "look, i've had the same problems you have, but i didn't be a douchebag about it" and gaara thought to himself,"hey, he might be on to something" and that's how it happened
