KB is right...in your local area, nothing spreads faster than word of mouth. Let's face it, launching a small business can be tough, and it's not like you have millions in your advertising budget. One of the keys is getting noticed, without going into debt to do it. But since you can't sit around waiting for referrals (you'll starve to death) you need to learn a bit about guerilla marketing and self-promotion. Here's two examples that I've used myself:
1. Contact your local newspaper. Have your business featured in an article about your specialty in the business or metro sections. It's easy, free, and it works.
2. Your local news stations. They constantly show small business owners opening their doors for various topics. It also helps if you can tie into some sort of timely subject like winter tune-ups, road hazards, etc. You're sure to get on the air if you can offer a courtesy service to the community to go along with the topic. Say the TV station wants to do a seasonal piece about antifreeze during the winter months...offer a free coolant system check-up at your facility. It costs you nothing but your time to check their radiator fluid levels, hoses, etc., but it brings people to your doors. If you use either of these ideas, make sure to provide good contact information and have your business legitimate, I.E.; liscensing, insurance, etc, before you toss yourself to the wolves.

Look to see where your business is coming from. If it is referrals from other businesses, then get out there and network more. If it is from word of mouth (customers telling other customers) then give your customers coupons they can use on their next visit or give to a friend. Don't be shy to ask your customers if they know of anyone who might need your services. If you have done a good job then people will be grateful and want to help you out.

Word of mouth, without a doubt. It's free, and it's what more people will trust over anything else.
