How can you tell the sex of a beta fish?

OK, so I know that the color a female fish is not as brilliant, but I was given a fish today that is so/so in color. Does anyone know how else you can tell if a beta is a male or female? I would like to know so that I can name this little jewel! Thanks in advance

if its got long fins then its easy -- its a boy. there are short finned males though. the only way of determining a female is a little spot on their underside where eggs come out. its kind of inbetween the ventral fins and anal fin (most of a bettas internal organs are in that area). here is a picture. good luck. they usually aren't that obvious.

Betta males and females are no different in their pigment. Females can be bright and colorful just as males can be dull. They have the same likelyhood of being colorful or dull.

Females do have shorter fins usually, they also have the ability to show stripes when they are stressed, and you will see a white ovipositor sticking out by the anal fin.

Females have shorter fins and usually a more rounded belly than males. If the fish isn't in the greatest of shape or is very young it can be hard to tell at first. Keep it by itself for a week or two and see if you can tell better

Male Bettas have long wavy fins. when females have rather short ones.

The females are less colorful and their bellies are more round than the males.
