Females can have colorful tails, but usually not as large as the male's. The BEST way to tell is by the fins. Look at the anal fin (the one on the bottom closest to the tail). If it the shape is triangular, it's a female. If it's thin and pointed (like a finger) it's a male. This only works for guppies, swordtails, platies (moons), and mollies!

DO NOT go by color. Some males are born without the genes for bright color or big flashy tails. If you accidentally leave them with the females, the dull males will be the ones reproducing.

To properly tell gender, look at the anal fins. Males have a long thin tube laying against their belly where the anal fin should be. Females have a normal round anal fin.

Guppies are easy. The males have a very slim body, straight line across the abdomen. Females have a rounded abdomen and are larger than males. Also, if the guppies are colored, the males have the most color, the females are rather colorless. Also, you should have about 3 to 5 females to each male, the males are quite oversexed, and if one on one, they will screw her to death. You will have lots of babies though.
