in biblical times, there weren't that many people in order to avoid intermarriage. when you marry a close blood relative, you are increasing the chances of having seriously deformed children. plus, i don't think it's illegal everywhere.

Ok, so yes in the bible close relatives did marry, but if you look that was before the Law ( the 10 commandments and the other mitzvahs or laws) where given. In these laws it forbid incest and other close relative marriages, it is rather specific. So as for the legality part, Many are founded on Judeo-Christian backgrounds that believe in the rules of not marrying to close in the family. As for the rest of your question im not sure, but I hope I helped some!

Back when family intermarriages were commonplace (especially among the European royals), it was noticed that unpleasant, unwanted and repugnant traits were becoming more pronounced. (For example, the Hapsburg Lip).

The combination of 2 recessive genes can produce a dominant trait that then re-enters the gene pool. The list of problems is too numerous to mention here, but think "Deliverance".

They didn't know about the risks then, but they are the same as today. If too closely related, the children of that relationship have a higher chance of developing mental and physical disorders.

Its mostly becuase of DNA. the children an intermaried couple are much more vulnerable to inheriting a genetic disease due to common recessive genes.

for survival.

Inbreeding leads to a reduction in genetic diversity, and the increased expression of negative recessive traits. Some of inbreeding's consequences include:
* increased genetic disorders
* fluctuating facial asymmetry
* lower birth rate
* higher infant mortality
* slower growth rate
* smaller adult size
* loss of immune system function.

The Incest Taboo (Law) originated early in human history. It is believed that natural selection initially generated mechanisms of sexual avoidance. and then, as the nuclear family emerged in hominid and human evolution, sociocultural selection led to the development of the incest taboo.

Everybody has deficiencies in their gene pool. If you mate with someone in your same gene pool, the problems are magnified x 2. Watch the movie "Deliverance" for examples of inbreeding and it's assorted genetic deficiencies.
