It mostly occurs on island habitats, when speaking of the evolution of species.

Island dwarfism has happened with woolly mammoths, humans, and other reasonably large animals.

Dwarfism is more common when areas are isolated-- that's why they found the "hobbits" also known as Homo floresiensis on an island near Java just a few yrs ago. W/in evolution, many organisms must dwarf to survive-- b/c there's not enough food available for everyone to be 5'8-- so over time the ppl get smaller and smaller or the organism. They also found some rats that were the size of dogs and other unique organism that were either larger or smaller than normal.

This also happens in areas that are isolated by mountains... You can learn a lot more about this in a biogeography course, which is really interesting.

I believe that they occur in European areas.
