Nothing really, the points are in place for those who need confirmation that they did something. the other reason the points are used is to get those who have to achieve something, like when you are 20 points from the next level, you tend to answer more to get to the next level, and when you do you have to get to the next level and so on.
And it is fun, I am addicted to YAHOO ANSWERS and the fact that I may help someone is self gratifying. and getting the BEST ANSWER is pretty cool too.

i am assuming that by point you are talking about the points that you earn in answers. All that these points allow you to do is to ask questions and you earn them by answering questions. After a certain amount of points you are allowed to answer and ask andvote and star more than in the level before.
