Been there, done that. Went to the police and the swine got 3 years inside. He's out now and my daughter has grown up so now it's my turn.

Well, I would say that the best way to deal with that would be to contact the authorities. As of late, there are more laws being passed everyday concerning this issue, and they are coming down harder on child molesters than ever before.
Going on a self-imposed man hunt, though no matter how rewarding it might feel immediately, would only make matters worse. Not only could you end up in jail yourself, but your child would feel responsible for something that was out of their hands.
After the molester had been taken into custody, you want to make sure you put your child in a situation where they can freely talk about what happened. Children who go through that horrible situation need to have a way to vent about what happened and be able to be told that it wasn't their fault. There are therapists who specialize in discussing these kinds of issues with children. I would suggest contacting one of these.
The most important thing is to remember that this is something that happened to your child, and they are the focus. Not the one who did the wrong. You need to let your child know that you are there for them in this hard time and talk to them about it.

I would let the law handle it, but I would follow up on the situation and hire a good lawyer to make sure that it really did get taken care of. I would also notify anyone else whose children that person might have come in contact with, like neighbors or if it's a relative other family members. And I would take your child to counseling to help them recover.

If the law could handle it, then I would let them deal with it. But I would make sure it was dealt with.
Some dirty old man scared my daughter on the way to school once. I followed her to school from a distance for quite some time, with the intention of tackling the guy and dragging him forcibly to the nearest police station. Never saw him though.

I think there are two answers to this question. The one where you answer with your head is to let the authorities handle it. The one with your heart is the complete opposite. All I can say is, if I knew one of my children was being molested - the molester can not run away fast enough or far enough away to get away from me.

Give the law a chance to handle it first. Then if that fails, a little self-help may be in order. But remember, you may be opening yourself to charges as well.

My primary concern would be my child and his or her well-being. Getting into trouble in the midst of that would not be the wisest course, so let the authorities deal with it, however imperfectly.
