I emailed somebody and said 'hi'. Then I just got an email back and she is saying 'Hi! Hows it hanging?' What does she mean?

Sounding "stupid" is something you need not fear. You asked a good question and you got some great answers. However, you need to use your spell check button.

All of the above answers are correct. Except they are trying to be delicate. Originally this term was only pointed at males with sexual overtones. It is intended (Originally) tongue in cheek greeting for men. But through women's lib and the gay movement, (and illiteracy.) It has been reinterpreted as: "How are you?"

'hows it hanging' means the same thing as 'hows it going', or 'whats up'
