high scores on a test of physical strength and muscular coordination. Any idea why this may be?

It probably has something to do with the area of the brain that is used for the stated activities. For example, children who learn a musical instrument are usually good at math and that is related to the area in the brain being used.

People who are generally lethargic in physical activities also tend to be less than motivated academically. Exposure to activity stimulates the brain, making understanding somewhat easier.
