Can Dell computers only be upgraded by Dell hardware? I've tried to put some RAM and some other parts in my girlfriends pc, and it either won't recognize it. Or won't even boot up completely.

Not necessarily, however, they do intentionally make it difficult to use non Dell bought components in most of their PCs.
You'll just have to find RAM compatible to the Dell installed modules already on the system board.
This is not unique to Dell.
HP once had the same reputation but has recently abandoned that practice in their consumer line of computers.
Dell uses an even more infamous practice in some of their printers. Unless it recognizes the toner as a Dell issued product it won't use it...... Dell puts microchips in some of their toners to assure that toners without this chip are not recognized by the printer.

Upgrading RAM - every PC needs the correct type of memory, but Dell isn't any more of a problem than any other brand.
I have 4 Dells - 3 desktops and a laptop. The desktops all take generic disk drives, no problem - I've changed and swapped several DVD combo drives myself. Memory is always easy to find on eBay. The laptop does require a special DVD drive - a proprietary Dell removable type, but again I got a correct spare off eBay very easily as a backup for the future in case it gets borked.
I have read that some Dell power supplies are special proprietary units, but again just go to eBay and buy one, or even buy a borked "spares/repair" box and strip out the power supply unit...

solid Asia does make a number of the elements for the tremendous majority of the computer approaches to boot Mac yet at the same time as your going to purchase a dell purchase an alien ware those subject matters are lightning quick i do not ignore they are the fastest pcs for sale to maximum persons lol in case you desire a perfect pc that is an all reason purchase the HP computer with beats audio guy that aspect is more beneficial complicated then metallic lol even besides the undeniable fact that the exterior is synthetic from brushed alluminum lol that is tremendous quick at the same time as it starts up the images will blow your suggestions and the sound it is in trouble-free terms an awfully solid made pc so there u have it

Not at all. In my experience Dell's have been very easy to upgrade with different hardware.

Make sure your ram is supported. It is not a good idea to mix and match different types of ram. If you use a ram with higher speeds then supported than it will run at the max supported settings. If you have a 333MHZ stick in with a 400MHZ stick then they will both only run at 333MHZ. Your Motherboard also only supports so much Ram.

Hardware is generally standard, and it doesn't usually matter who the manufactorer is. One thing you do need to check, especially for RAM is compatibility. RAM has different speeds, and faster RAM will not run on a motherboard that only supports slower RAM.

i don't think so.
maybe the the parts were not compatible. make sure you research what parts are compatible
