He's probably just fine. My baby is 18 lbs, and she is four months (she is big, but proportionate). If the doctor says there is nothing to worry about, he is most likely ok.

It's really impossible for a baby to become "obese" before they're introduced to solid food and junk food.
Babies are supposed to be chunky. They need that layer of body fat for warmth and as an energy supply as they grow.
Yes your baby is heavier than the "average" 5 month old. But at that age, the average is pretty much meaningless. Your baby is the perfect size - for him.

wow if you are this way and he is only 5 months I feel sorry for him. Babies will gain and lose weight dont worry so much. Let him grow up and still dont use the words fat to your child. Start him on a healthy lifestyle now and he should be okay. I think you have had or do have with yourself. Good luck.

If the doc says that he is fine then you should not worry. My son was 15 pounds at 2 months (really big boy). He stayed chunky until he started moving around and then he slimmed out. Babies usually grow out of it eventually. Keep up with his regualr doctor visit and they will monitor his growth. If the doc is at all concerned he will let you know. And don't ever hesitate to express your concerns to the doctor, thats what he's there for.

Most babies are a little chubby. They need the fat to keep warm as their bodies don't regulate temperature as well. 18 lbs at 5 months, without knowing your percentiles, sounds normal to me.
Instead of focusing on weight, focus on his growth curve and his percentiles. My son was always in the 50th percentile for height and the 75th for weight, regardless of age. If someone looked at my son and said, "Wow, you're kid's kinda fat," I would smile through gritted teeth and say, "Well, he's consistent on his growth curve, so I'm not worrying."
And if they didn't know what I was talking about, they had no business making the comment to begin with.

He is only 5 months old, You don't have anything to worry about! Fat babies are healthy baby's. It's when they get into toddler ages when you should be a little more concerned about it. When he becomes mobile he will burn a lot of that sweet baby fat right off. Also if your Doctor says it's OK, than it's OK.

If your dr isnt worried than I wouldnt be. When they get active crawling, walking, running ect. They will lose the baby fat because of how active they are. My son is 10 months and weighs 25 lbs. He weighed 14 lbs at 2 months.

Your pediatrician is right there is a weight chart they go by, it is hard for a baby to be overweight. He'll probably work it off when he walks anyway. My brother was 25 pounds at that age he looked like buddha but he is tall and slender now.

Do you breast feed? Breast fed babies tend to be much heavier prior to weening. Once they're weened they tend to slim quite a bit. My last Grandson was 95th percentile+ on weight, length and head size until he was weened. For a while he was off the charts. Currently (28 mos.) he's only around 70th percentile and is a slim, trim, cheerful, intelligent kid.

It doesn't matter.. just watch his junk food intake. When he starts running aroudn he will thin down. My daughter was chubby.. and thinned down alot. Even at kindergarder, she was a little bit chubby in the cheeks. She is now in grade 2 and skinny and tall... don't worry, he is to young to run around alot yet
