what made my digital thermostat shut off?

No numbers, no lights. The breakers in the electrical box are fine, the power in the house is okay. The AC/heater doesn't turn on.

The thermostat says inside of if that it doesn't need batteries.

Possibly a wire came off of the thermosat or furnace. or you might have a low voltage problem in your furnace. transformer

It very well could be the batterys in the thermostat.
