Decent.

Over-and-over when people talk about GRF they say he was a decent man. He was a man that put his own political ambitions aside and did what was needed to help heal a nation torn apart. He stepped up to serve his country repeatedly -- even answering the call during one of this nation's darkest moments. He brought back respect to the office of the presidency by showing that it was still second to his family.

In foreign policy I think Ford hammered in place the concepts of detente -- keeping the cold war just that, a war on paper. His trips to Asia and Europe during a harsh recession kept America economically active.

Domestically, again, he brought the nation back together. Not many people give him credit for this, but I think he saved our 200th birthday. Gave hope and pride to the fact that we'd lasted 200 years! It may seem little, but our nation reaching 200 was amazing -- and he helped make it feel special during a very rough time.

I use to work as a reporter for NPR in Lansing, Michigan. One night, during the holiday season, I was invited to a rather "political" Christmas open house. I went and mid way through the party slipped into the den at this house to catch the bowl game scores. After sitting on the couch for a few moments I realized there was someone else there watching the scores, from a recliner in the room.

Softly he said "It's not a good night for the Big Ten and Michigan is really taking one."

I was an MSU grad so it didn't break my heart to hear Michigan was taking one in the shorts. Though it was sad to hear about the Big Ten overall. I turned and started to say something when he spoke again.

"I played for Michigan... we had a championship season while I was there."

I looked closer and realized it was GRF sitting in the seat. I was stunned for a moment. I then asked "I heard the Lions made you an offer to play for them before you joined the Navy."

Was one of the greatest conversations I've ever had in my life.
