Shopping on North Michigan is very fun!
My favorite place to shop is the Water Tower Place. It's around 800 N Michagan - right across from the Hancock Building. The "mall" is 7 floors and has about 4-8 stores in each floor. Also attached to the same building are Macy's and Lord & Taylor.
H&M is across the street and sells discounted clothing (although some are pretty nice)
If you're going to be a little futher south on Michigan, try Shops at Northbridge (Close to 500 N Michigan). Also set up as a "mall" - it features Nordstrom.
Between the two, I actually prefer Water Tower. They have a very fun eatery on the ground floor, plus they have a bigger range of stores to shop in.

If your hotel is on North Michigan, you'll be completely surrounded by fantastic shopping. The whole Magnificent Mile is shop after shop and mall after mall. If you can't decide, head to Water Tower Place, at the north end of the Magnificent Mile, where you've got pretty much everything all in one place.
Personally, I prefer State Street to North Michigan. Things are generally cheaper, and the old Marshall Field's store (now Macy's) is one of the most elegant buildings anywhere.

Go to macys which is on fifth avenue, or get a greyhound bus outside of Chicago to the close city of Appleton, where there are several large department stores, and America's largest T.J.Maxx.
