Start just by petting her. They are nervous animals, so she may try to run away from you and squeal at first. Give her treats occassionally, so she gets used to your hand in her cage meaning a "good" thing.

When you're ready to try to pick her up, take her cage and put it in a room where you can close the doors and she can't get away (believe it or not, the bathtub is good to start in - if she gets away, she can't get out!). Put her cage on the floor and sit or kneel beside her cage. This way, if she kicks and scratches and you accidentally drop her, she doesn't go far. Be prepared for her to try to get away at first.

When you pick her up, don't squeeze too hard - just enough that she can't get away easily - hold one hand under her behind her front legs and hold one hand under her rear end for support). Turn her to face you and hold her against your body. Just pet her for a little while, then put her back (she may try to get away when you're putting her back in her cage as well). Do this a few times each day till both of you get comfortable with the holding.

Pull a chair over by her cage and wear a glove or sock over your hand if you are afraid that she will bite you. Doing this gives you a feeling of safety, and it also helps protect your hands if she has long nails. Then sit down in the chair, open up her cage, and just reach in. Put one hand over her back and one hand under her. Once you lift her out of the cage, place her on your lap, because some guinea pigs squirm. Pet her gently and spend some time getting comfortable around her. Just remember whenever you get nervous that the most she can do is prick your finger (which won't happen if you are wearing a sock), scratch you, or leave a little something on your carpet! =]

Hope this helps!

Don't be scared....the little girl is probably more scared of you than you are of her. When you go to pick her up, move slowly and talk to her quietly. Than gently pick her up with two hands around her middle, and put her in you lap, still holding on to her until she calms down. Always stay close to the ground, be in a room with a closed door, and use a towel when you put her on your lap. Just don't worry. Sit by the cage until you get used to each other. I have had many pigs, so don't worry! To help calm her down after she is in your lap, try giving her a little piece of carrot to munch on.

P.S. The gloves idea is good, I've never done it, but it would probably help boost your confidence! Good luck!

I used to have guinea pigs when I was younger. The best way that I can remember is to place your hand under their belly and just lift up. Hold them on your lap or lay them on your chest. The chance that they will bite is slim to none (just make sure your hands are clean, so they don't smell anything on you). They are very sweet animals.

You have to get over your fear of holding it. If you are nervous about it, it won't work. I have had a guinea pig and held it alot. I would suggest petting it alot. You will eventually have to go for it. Just think of it as a small kitten.

The right way to hold a guinea pig, is to support its head/front paws and its butt/back paws. ( You don't have to touch its butt) If it looks uncomfortable than it probably is. Don't worry about it bitting you, because they aren't mean, they just want love and attention. It will bcome your best friend once you get to know each other.

If you are scared that it will bite or scratch you then don't worry. Do what I do. I'm scared Guinea pigs might bite and scratch so what I do is I wear gloves for awhile, that will get you used to them and vice versa. So don't worry, they are just cuddly little furballs!
