Get yourself a nice, classic Fender Stratocaster! I believe they are around $370 or so. It will be a great choice for you, because of the types of music you want to play.
There are many variations of the Strat, so go to a place like Guitar Center to try all of them out. Be aware that you can talk the salesdude into a lower price at Guitar Center...I used to work there and beginners don't know that they don't have to pay sticker price most of the time. Generally, they will lower the price for you.
Good luck!

well, since u consider 400.00 cheap, i would recommend getting an epiphone g-400. it sounds sort of like the gibson sg.....it is very versatile in my opinion..

BUT..i would go to ur local music store and try out all the ones that look good to you...cant play guitar? who cares...just ask for help...and if while learning with ur new guitar, u dont like the one u chose,,return it.

I'm extremely partial to the RG series from Ibanez. They're really versatile, and always a good value for whatever price range you're in.

I would say anything that looks like a Stratocaster. I have a Duo-tone by Fender... it doesn't have a whammy bar or anything fancy, but it sounds good.
