Please explain how the environment shapes the brain. If a teen engages in violent, reckless activity, then the brain will wire itself accordingly

B.F. Skinner also known as the father of behavioural science discusses positive and negative reinforcment and gives this example:

"students who are punished when they do not study may study, but they may also stay away from school (truancy), vandalize school property, attack teachers, or stubbornly do nothing. Redesigning school systems so that what students do is more often positively reinforced can make a great difference"

This suggests that if a teen engages in violent reckless activity then what in his environment has led him to behave this way?

However there are other things that attribute to a persons behaviour i.e. socially acceptable behaviour, good values and ethics, religion and education can deter a person from displaying adverse behaviour.

It has long been known that behavior is affected by its consequences. We reward and punish people, for example, so that they will behave in different ways.


The Nature verses Nurture debate tries to determine how much of behaviour is genetic or environmental. This debate is ongoing
