I hate to be negative but in my experience they are absolute crap.
I'm a computer technician and in my job I see a lot of laptops, Sony, IBM, Asus, Acer, Toshiba, Compaq/HP... the worse I have ever seen is Acer.
Most Acer laptops I come across have loose keys, sometimes the casing has come loose in the corners, they often get dead pixels on the LCD, most laptops will be OK if you drop them, but not an Acer. An Acer will just burst open. The touchpads are ooften very crap and as the laptop heats up, the touchpad gets very flakey and the mouse cursor jumps all over the place. The plastic they are made of is cheap and nasty, scratches easily and looks like crap as well.
On the whole, I'd stay away from Acer. If I was to buy a laptop, I'd by an IBM or a Toshiba. MAYBE a HP or Compaq. First choice would be an IBM (Lenovo) though.
Little tip from me: When you DO get a laptop, uninstall all the crap that comes preloaded on them. You will find the laptop runs 10 times faster. :)
Good luck!!! :)
The guy's comments below me are reasonable, but you need to remember a few things. Cheap computers are only cheap because they don't cost much to make. They don't cost much to make because they use cheap parts.
I think the higher cost Acer laptops might be alright but I wouldn't go near a cheapie Acer. It's good of those two people who say Acer is a good brand but I'm being honest when I say that most Acer laptops I see are flimsy and crap. I really do see a lot of Acer laptops in bad condition... I don't mean to put Acer down for any reason I am just being honest... I occasionaly see Acer's that work OK, but I also see other brands working great most of the time. I'd stay away from Asus too, unless they'v changed in the last few months, they are pretty crap as well.
:)

I agree with the second commenter. Acers are honestly the best out there right now, most laptop companies have gone down the drain. Acer puts the best hardware in theirs, you can get a dual core, 2gb ram for just under a grand. Their best are the Acer Ferraris; however they are very expensive. the first commenter may have bad experiences, but they may be older laptops, laptops don't really get taken to a computer tech until they are older and broke, so you might want to consider that. Do NOT buy a Dell, Compaq, or HP all 3 of those will only drive you to hating technology, those companies could make a quality computer if their life depended on it.
Besides Acer IBM or Sony Vaios aren't too bad. 1st pick should be an Acer. My friend just bought one at my recommendation and thinks it is the best thing since sliced bread and i will be purchase a new one within a few months.

I actually have a different response than the dude above me.
I just bought my girlfriend an Acer laptop for Christmas and thus far we haven't had any problems with it. It was a steal at $650 before $100 rebate and has been great.
It runs really quickly and the LCD is incredible. I'm a very big fan of the laptop and my girlfriend is very gentle with it, so I don't forsee having to worry about keys popping off or her dropping it any time soon....so as long as you're careful with it, I'd assume it'll be all good.

I was actually going to ask the same thing! I'm currently looking at labtops to buy soon(possibly in March). I'm doing my research on them now though. I'm currently in a toss-up between acer's or a toshiba brand type.
