I am thinking the Padres with starters Jake Peavy, Greg Maddux, Chris Young, David Wells, and Clay Hensley. Then relievers Cla Meredith and Trever Hoffman.

I agree that the Padres will be good (plus they play in a weak division), and the Brewers are underrated (but top heavy and Sheets has never really lived up to his potential). But I imagine by midseason Clemens will make his choice on either the Yankees or the Red Sox, which will probably propel that team to the top of the list.

#1 the Angels

Rotation: Lackey, the "good" Weaver, E. Santana, Escobar, Colon/Saunders.

Bullpen: KRod, Shields

#2 the Tigers:

Rotation: Bonderman, Verlander, Rogers, Robertson, Maroth

Bullpen: Jones, Zumaya, Rodney

#3 the Phillies:

Rotation: Meyers, Hamels, Garcia, Lieber, Eaton/Moyer

Bullpen: Gordon, Madsen

I would put the Padres at #4. Their numbers tend to get deflated due to the ballpark being so pitcher-friendly.

The Red Sox have spent a lot of $$$$$$$ but the dam Mets have brought in some older but pretty darn good hurlers. The Yankees staff could surprise also. But don't count out the Dodgers staff.

Every Red Sox Starter besides Wakefield will have over 15 wins and he will have around 13.
So the answer is the Red Sox.

I’ll stack the Phils pitching with anyone in the NL East, perhaps all of baseball, and come out ahead.

Just to move away from the big names and large payroll teams. How about the Starting 5 for the Milwaukee Brewers?

Sheets
Capanauno
Bush
Suppon
Vargas

I think it ranks up with any other 5 man group.

The yankees will start the season off with very good pitching. Andy Petite, Mike Mussina, and Chin Mein Wang will be a good starting three. Their bulpen will exceed with Farnsworth and Rivera in the 8th and 9th. Look for the yankees to win their 10th division title.
