i went to a hs where most of the ppl were from affluent families.
i work in a factory as a machine operator and go to college after work.
the company had a thanksgiving dinner for us. they hired a catering company. and 2 dudes that iwent to hs w/ worked as caterers.
they were home from college bc of thanksgiving. and obviously the 2 dudes got the job bc of connections.

so, i walk in the breakroom and i see somebody familiar. then i realized that they went to hs with me. 1 of them was in the same class, the other was a yr above us.
i wasnt their friends, but they knew who i was.

i know i shouldnt be ashamed of working there. but i think i was. i felt like running out of there.
so i got my food, and sat where they couldnt see me.
i ate fast & got out.

would u have done the same thing?

I highly doubt too many people are doing better than you. Don't sweat it.

i always kinda laugh when i find out one of my girlfriends is dating a guy that doesn't have a "manly" job like my hubby, who's a steelworker - i can't help but think he's lazy! you and your old classmates are doing the same things - working and going to school - it's just that they have puss jobs!

i know what you mean though - i really love waitressing at crappy dinners - usually i'm totally into it, getting coffee for my regulars and teasing kids on first dates, but every once in a while somebody i used to know will come in and i'll feel ashamed that i'm not as sucessful as they are. you're reaction was totally normal.

ps - the only reason i can take those crappy waitress jobs is because my hubby takes care of all the bills with his factory job. don't be ashamed of the fact that you are willing to work hard - it's a skill that i'm sure will be appreciated in whatever field you are going to school for.

You should be ashamed of thinking that way. Never be ashamed of making an honest living. You are paying bills and making a life for yourself. you need to avoid those type of people because you have a job?, money is green whether it's made in a factory or digging dirt.

You should never be ashamed. With as much unemployment there is out there, Any job is a good job. If you do your best at whatever job you have, then hold your head up high and be proud of it, whether you work as a factory worker, or a doctor. No honest job is a bad job.

They should have been embarrassed to work as caterers. ;)
If your work is embarrassing, maybe you should look for something that isn't. Try looking at the bigger picture. Will this job be your stepping stone for a better future job? Sometimes we must work at something just to know what we don't want to do as a career. If you are working your way through college you are better than most.

Not all jobs are fancy glory jobs. You are building your character. You will get the perfect job someday, probably through working dependably in something that you did not prefer.

Hold your head high.

No, someone told me years ago......your either going to get credentials from working on a job or going to college...................in the end one is now better than the other....

My husband is a high school graduate (he started working there at 18, on a bike)...I am a college graduate (debutant with a mustang my 17)....hes a Foreman at his plant....I'm still trying to find myself.....His income is more than most with a masters degree (they pay him to sleep) Ive never been offered a contract with anywhere near the perks he has.....(and I taught him the art of banking) so at the end of the day.....its about where you end up NOT where you started......good luck
