What defines a webcomic as "independent"?

Question

I keep hearing about independent webcomics, and I have a webcomic, but how would I know if it's "indie" or not? Is "indie" just a fancy way of saying "not sponsored"?

it's basically a comic without any major backing from something like a big name comic company or other company, so in a way it can mean not sponsored, at least by anything big time, like I guess it could still be sponsored by a local store and still be considered Indie
