Depending on where you are I'd suggest trying GoSasa.com, it's basically a classified ads search engine, so you can search for apartments and it will find and list results from pretty much all the classified sources in your area (including rent.com and craigslist). Since it lumps a bunch of them together it makes it easy to browse your options.

The only thing is that it's relatively new and while it supports most major cities and several "smaller" towns, I'm not sure whether or not it will work well yet in your area.

Anyway, I hope that helps!

Rent.com-type sites usually only list managed properties (apartment buildings, etc.). Craigslist and classifieds tend to be direct landlord rental listings.

Many landlords, however, do not like to find and qualify potential renters on their own. They will list their property in MLS with either a real estate broker or a rental property brokerage. I would highly recommend contacting one of these agencies. They typically go by names such as "rent finders" or something similar. They should be in the yellow pages under apartments or real estate. You do not pay a commission--the landlord pays it. The agency will have access not only to their own listings, but to all the other rentals listed in the local MLS database as well. Some of them even have searchable websites. Many rentals, in fact, you will not find any other way. They are not advertised other than in the MLS database.

Based on my own experience, you'll likely find many reasonably priced rentals by going through a rent-finder agency. Many of the rentals I found this way were priced better than the direct craigslist and classified ones.

Of course, you didn't mention where you live. I can, however, tell you that most real estate agencies also handle rentals. You can also try Property Managment in the phone book. They usually handle nothing but rentals.
Good luck.
