When you think about it, DNA is just a polymer like nylon. You can add as many subunits as you like, it just keeps growing.

I too, fail to guess what the second half of the question was supposed to be.

The answer to the first part of your question is that the strand of DNA is rapped around protiens called histones.

If you straighten a chromosome out from one end to the other, it is one continuous "string". So, it is one molecule linked by phosphodiester bonds. One chromosome = One molecule.
