Considering your request to keep the media, the government and my own interpretation in mind I would say this:

Truth is the fact that remains after bias has been removed. The trick to finding truth is being able to tell the difference between fact and self-serving bias in others and/or in yourself.

Self-serving bias can have many causes:

Cognitive Dissonance - protecting ones belief structure by subconsciously disallowing your belief to be validated as wrong despite overwhelming evidence. This is why, for example, hardcore atheists and literalist theists will never find a compromise - both of their core belief structures depend so deeply on being right both are LITERALLY UNABLE TO ACKNOWLEDGE whatever merit may exist in the arguments from the other side. I think that any two diametrically opposed belief systems will suffer similar conflicts.

Confirmation Bias - having a pre-conceived conclusion in mind such that whatever evidence is presented is seen as confirmation of the conclusion. This well documented and PROVEN PHENOMENON is why scientists use double blind experimental procedure in statistical research such as drug effect testing, psychological theory testing and uninfluenced second opinion consultation whenever possible in interpretive diagnosis, etc.,...

Political/Authoritative/Economic Preservation - The willingness to knowingly help or allow bias to persist when it is beneficial personally in some way. I think the problem and how it leads to its associated results should be obvious.

Truth to me, means that you answer questions honestly, and to your best ability. If you made a mistake in the past, don't lie to cover it up, admit you were wrong, and try to fix it. Don't pretend to be someone you are not to get attention. Admit your faults, and show the person the real good inside of you.
Tell your kids you are not perfect, and make mistakes too, but you love them, and want the best for them. This is why you continue to teach them how to be truthfull, and how to do the right things in life. Even though maybe some of the advice wasn't so wise, you truthfully continue to do your best with your kids. Even if they don't like it at the time.
The government, and the media do much to cover over one lie after another. I for one don't trust them, and that is the truth.

it means to me , that there could be an alternative to the issue! as far as the government or media the word 'truth' should never be mentioned as it will always be an alternative!
