It's definitely possible, but very unlikely. Even without your homepage open, you're always vulnerable to a hacker accessing your computer. However, there would have to be some motive, as its not always simple to do.

So whats the question? ANYTIME you download ANYTHING from ANYWHERE you are opening yourself up to the possibility of downloading some type of malware! This is akin to going to the grocery store and buying spoiled food! Aint no mystery here! Another all too common misbelief is that virus protection and malware removal tools will keep you from getting malware! This is so far from the truth it aint funny! Virus protection gives the user a false sense of protection! Their is NO virus protection that will catch all malware! I clean peoples PCs out for a living and I make good money at it! I cant believe the general public is so naive about it!
I REALLY get a chuckle out of people who disagree with my answer! I remove this crap for a living! The plain and simple truth is, you dont want to believe it and go on about your merry way until you have an infection! You then scratch yer *** wonderin where it came from!

Just goes to show that everyoe needs to follow basic security.
1. Always have your anti-virus scanning software looking at your email.
2. All email from people you don't know is suspect.
3. Scan any and all attached files!

Thanks for that matey. On the flip side, this means a rise in business for a bit, on the removal front.
