I was a Correction Officer for thirty-seven years. I think that gives me some expertise in the field. You didn't say where you were, so I can't say much about the working conditions. I can suggest that you get a good education first, as it will always come in handy. You should pay particular attention to any classes which teach good English and grammar, as most of your time you will be writing reports. You have to be a "people person", as most of your dealings with your inmates, will be conducted, on a one on one basis. It can be a difficult job, as we were initially told, you don't see your successes, only your failures. I know that it sounds cynical, but in dealing with inmates, should you pursue the career, you should remember, what I was told by an old timer, "You can like them, you can be nice to them, but don't ever trust them." Good luck.

You have be like more than a step ahead of them, but you also have have respect for each prisoner, even though they did something wrong. If you treat them with respect, they will treat you with respect. It's a tough job!!!

Get on with the State of California. It's a difficult job, but your income and benefits will be far better than teachers, and five times better than say, the average printer or baker or candlestick maker.

My circle of friends and most people I have heard discuss this, in California, feel it is the lowest rung of the employment pole, and anyone who really "wants" to do this is seeking the lowest common denominator. Expect to be forced to do some pretty despicable things if you want to succeed in this profession.
