Advantages

1. Save money on wedding/reception that you could use instead to pay off debt, use for a down payment on a house, or some other big-ticket things that will have long-lasting effect. (All that you'll really take away from a full-blown wedding/reception is a photo album.)
2. Avoid the usual stress that a wedding and reception brings.
3. Avoid some family-related hassles if they're an issue.

Disadvantages:

1. Might disappoint family and friends if you don't do the whole, traditional shebang.
2. You might believe that you'll regret not doing the wedding/reception later.
3. Since you can do the courthouse thing in a matter of days, you might find yourself getting married before you've really, really, really thought it through.

Getting married is an adult action. That means you need to decide which option is best for you as a couple in the long run, and stand firm to those who want you to make a different choice.

About getting married in the courthouse, then a church wedding later - For what?

You make the rules....it's YOUR day. If you want to do the courthouse thing...then knock yourself out. I don't think it's a bad thing at all, plus it'll save a ton of money. Best of luck to you.

Your wedding is all about what you and your man want. Dont let others influence you. It is polite to keep in mind requests or traditions of your religion or family, but ulitmately its YOUR day!
