It's obvious that it's a synonym for fixture, or match, but I could be wrong. (And I know what a tie is as far a the end result is concerned so that's not what I'm talking about.)
To give an example of the context that it was used in, "...but Ferguson confirmed that the forward, who is suspended for next weekend’s FA Cup fifth-round tie at home to Reading, may be given a short break next week to recharge his batteries before the resumption of the Champions League campaign."

I searched several Internet articles and I noticed that "tie" is only used for FA cup matches and Champions league matches. I've never seen it used to describe EPL or La Liga matches. So I thought maybe it has something to do with how the winner is chosen. For the FA cup and Champions league, it's a method of elimination while for EPL or La Liga, the teams accumulate points.

Then I found these definitions that agree with what I thought. Thanks for asking the question.

cup tie -
1. A knockout match in a round of a competition for a cup.
2. An eliminating game between teams in a cup competition game.
