Time travel is impossible, because like you say, we would have had visitors. Unless that is what ghosts are????

Yes - we're all travelling forward in time at the moment at a slow and steady rate. If we weren't we would not experience life in the way that we do and would have no concept of the past or the future.
I think to clarify the real meaning of the question though, it has to be split into 2 parts :-
1. is it possible to travel forward in time at a faster rate than normal?
2. is it possible to travel backward in time?
The answer to q1 is probably - but it would be very difficult to produce the massive amounts of energy necessary to do so. The answer to q2 is no (according to current understanding). But then again a hundred years ago most people thought space travel was impossible.

yeah sure time travel could be possible both backwards and forwards
For quite some time, Professer Ronald Mallett has been working on plans for a time machine. This machine uses a ring laser and the theory of relativity. the machine when finish will be able to loop space time back on to itself, he expects to get a message from a future self when the machine is turn on (in about 10 years time). however you can only go as far back to when the machine was switch on. if it works mallett will effectively be able to transmit messages back in time. it would be a good way of getting the lotto numbers.
as for travelling forward in time you would need to achieve fantastic speeds near light speed for noticable effects (einstein theory again). the satellites that we sent up to orbit earth have to get their onboard timers reset once a year by .02 of a second. even though the satellites are not moving anywhere near the speed of light they are moving fast enough for time to be .02 second per year slower than us here on Earth. no matter how small the difference there is the proof of forward time travel.
Oxford physicist David Deutsch has a reasonable theory why we don't see any time travellers, each time a time traveller goes back in time and changes history, earths timeline splits up, the earth that was effected by the changes of the time traveller goes off on a alter dimension while the earth that we know can not be effected and goes on as normal. therefore we will never see any time travellers because each time they appear they will instantly be sent off on a different dimension or path. it has a lot to do with 'quantum theory' which i know nothing about i read some layman books on the subject and i wish i didn't because now i'm more confuse then ever.
some of these theories have been accepted as fact almost everywhere (such as einstein relavitity theory) while others are still waiting for proof or until better theories arises.
i do believe time will be manipulated by humans one day (if there is a will there is a way) but how will we used this future technology is another thing.

It depends on what you mean by time travel. It is known to be possible for one to travel faster or slower into the future. Traveling close to the speed of light and returning to the point of departure results in time having passed more rapidly for the world left behind than for the traveler. The traveler in this way has the ability to travel into the future but there is not any way we know to return to a past time.

Einstein proved that it was possible by his experiment with atomic clocks with were extremely accurate and set to the exact same time. He then took one clock and flew around the world in some high speed jet or other and when the clocks came together again one of them was slightly changed. See the link below.

It is possible but would take unbelievable speed to make any great impact backwards. Travel forward. Don't think so...

To say it's not possible would make you a fool. How can anybody say what will or won't be possible in the future?
It's unlikely based on our current understanding of the universe but we are still fumbling round in the dark so to speak in evolutionary terms. Much of what we believe about time travel is theoretical & cannot be proved or disproved at present.
If travellers from our future have visited us they would hardly be likely to shout about it would they?

it would only be possible if someone had a machine capable of ripping a hole in the universe. imagine the universe as a balloon. 3 dimensional space is the envelope whilst inisde is the 4th dimension: time. if the contents were to pour out from the inner then time itself would be tangible. i theorized this a long time ago or was it next week?. whats needed is a machine with more power than the earths barry centre (the earth moon gravitional constant which lies in earths inner core). let me be the first to pull the cord i wanna see what happens.

No, But as you near the speed of light, everything around you speeds up so that you seem to be going at a normal speed but if you wen't out travelling at near the speed of light for 10 years, the world could be extinctified via some neuclear war! (or at least everyone that you knew could be dead and you're 1 yearold brother could be close to death or have died) Dosn't that count as time traveling or what?!

When I was attending the University of Washington, the prof I had for Astronomy class said that while time travel is possible, there is nothing that we would be able to change. It would be like watching a movie. Even if history could not be changed, it would be fantastic to be able to verify/debunk what we already "know", and that would help us make a better future. I think it is worth pursuing.

doesnt matter what anyone believes, reality never conform to our aspirations, we must conform to reality, something humans have been hard to learn.
anyho. einstein said it cant be done but alot of progress in colmology has been made sence then, and it yet may be possible but with technology and a level of physics we have yet to grasp, think thousand or millions of years more advanced then anything we have today, it hard to think of such things for our minds are confined to what we know here and now
who knows what tomaroo will bring but it will be here just as today will become yesterday. the danger is what if man achieves time travel, the ultimate god like technology. more dangerous then any atom bomb, for history could be undone

if time travel would be a possibility in the future, then it would be possible for time travelers in the future to go back to any point in time past or present
