Explain to me why teachers should be concerned about the readability of content area materials. Why should they be concerned and what measures should be inplace for students to read?

Seriously? Why write something that is not easily readable? What purpose are you intending the materials to fulfill? Do they clearly and easily do that?

If your students are reading at the 4th grade level and you are providing content materials that require an 8th grade vocabulary and other measure reading level, then the kids are going to get lost in the details of the material and not be able to build the concepts, which is what we hope you are teaching.
