Caves at one time were used as a type of infirmary for people afflicted with Tuberculosis, It was believed that the cool humid air helped in the recovery or treatment, commonly referred to in the early 1900's as "consumption" it was a very common disease and was spread widely because little was known about it, people affected were commonly called "lungers". I'm not sure of the real effectiveness of the caves air, without researching, but I do believe that it provided at least some relief, I believe that at one time it was a pretty popular treatment.
