old baskets that are dirty & the wood is driedout..should I soak them,
revarnish,use wood cleaner? All are vintage & of course, hand-made

Yes, soak them in soapy water, and then brush very gently with a soft brush. I use a toothbrush. You can then rinse and rub softly with a towel. If using wood cleaner, wait until the basket is completely dry. I wouldn't recommend wood cleaner, unless you choose the expensive natural ingredients. Do not use chemical cleaners.

Call a museum restorer and ask what she would do.

I have just put them in the shower to just rinse off the dirt. If you rub on some of those old dyes they may bleed out. Then I just set them out somewhere to dry.
