I think it's safe if the kids set their profile to private and only add people they know personaly to their friends list.

As long as the kid makes their profile private, knows who they are accepting as their friends, and is an overall smart kid. If they go messaging old men and agreeing to meet up, then they shouldn't be allowed to ever go on such a site. But if it is a smart, levelheaded kid, then they shouldn't have a big problem. I think parents could monitor the child's profile to make sure they don't have anything too revealing, and makes sure they don't reply to messages from strangers. I know 12 year olds who have myspaces and haven't had any problems, so far.

I have a myspace and it is totally safe. You can monitor what goes on it. For example I live in Area 51 Colorado. You can also set your profile to private.

Umm no not really.. but not for the reasons you think.. just like Yahoo i wish ages would be known up front... i'll certainly talk to someone whos an adult differently than someone I think is a kid..
Personally at this point I wouldnt have a problem with banning anyone under age 18 from the internet period.. i'm rather tired of dumbing down for juviniles.. I earned my age and stripes in that age.. they havent..

At any given moment, there are 50,000 sexual predators online.
1 out of 5 children have been solicited by sexual predators or pedophiles on the internet.
Only 25% of solicited children were distressed enough by their encounters to tell their parents; 75% remained silent!
