I've been on it for 4 years now and I was wondering if it's a good idea to take a break?
When I go off it, I get heavier and longer periods and I get bad period pain.
What are the benefits of taking a break?

Nah, there's no need to take a break unless you want to save a tiny bit of money from not having to pay for it every month. I've been on the pill for 5 years and plan to stay on it as long as I possibly can, since I don't plan to have children of my own. And if you normally have painful periods (I did, too), then you should definitely stay on it. There's no point in suffering when you don't have to.

Back in the '70s and '80s, when the hormone doses in the pills were much higher than today, women had more trouble getting pregnant the longer they had been on the pill (my mother, for example, was on the pill for four years and was unable to conceive me for a whole year - that is, a whole year after she stopped taking her pill). But pills today contain a much better-studied and more efficient dose of hormones (and probably many fewer chemicals) than 20 years ago.

So, you should stay on it. Just think of all the great things and good moods you'll miss otherwise if you have to sit at home PMSing and go to work with miserable cramps and can't think straight.

I'm on Seasonale (I only get my period 4 times a year) and it's great. You can even skip your period by skipping your sugar pills and taking hormone pills straight through (yes, it's safe). There are no benefits. If you plan on getting pregnant then of course take a break. If not, dont.
