Such a move would put Russia back onto the path of being a world superpower again. I also think it goes to prove that the United States is not the only country with something to lose--or prove--in the Middle East.

The Soviet Union's role in Afghanistan can be compared to the United State's role in Vietnam to any extent one likes. The challenge is to find enough information to form one's own opinion, and then to back that opinion with what you have learned. Political, Military, and in the case of Afghanistan, Religious factors - will all come into play. There is a sufficient amount of information available on Vietnam, but noticibly less (in English) on Afghanistan. One last thing to remember, is that calling Afghanistan "Russia's Vietnam" is only a convenient title, one also may want to disprove the title after finding more differences than similarities.

No they arent vengeful. Every country has a right to have weapons for its own defense. We used to be the #1 arms dealers in the world.
Ya we were selling Iran weapons!! they have F-14 fighters and we told them they couldnt have parts. So they have to buy from other countries. we sold venezuela alot of military equipment but now no parts so they buy from russia.

Iran now has the capability to produce it's own weapons. Scary isn't it?
And lets not forget that the US has also done some dirty work in the past. Supplying Israel from the late 60's onwards for example.

Russia has more "reasons" than that to want to get back at us. We essentially broke up their union of socialist states and their status, even if illusory, of a great power.
