A negatively charged particle with charge - q is far away from a positive charge +Q that is fixed in place. As -q moves closer to + Q, does the electric field do positive or negative work? How about if the charges are the same (+ +) or (- -)?

it will do positive work, when the charges are the same it will do negative work.
