Sorry, but it's the American land property system, inherited from ye old british feudal landholding system... it is called tenure in fee simple.
That means that you effectively act as owner of the land, with full rights to build, modify or destroy what's on it, and you can sell or give away your rights, but you still hold the land from the state, and you pay a tax on it as a reminder, plus the fact that you hold rights only to the surface, not to underground exploitation (mineral), or to circulation in the airspace above a certain height (so it is legal for planes to pass above your lands).
Cheer up, I hear that in some states, you can buy allodial (full and land-tax-free) property... Start checking around Nevada and other places in the southwest, if my memory is right.

You have to look at taxation in its totality, and the uses made of that money.
I don't object to paying property taxes, but I do object to non-property owners being allowed to vote in ever-higher rates of tax. I think that the law should say that the property tax will be passed on as a separate charge to every renter - believe me, if renters knew they were going to have to foot the bill the next time they decide to raise property taxes, we'd see a lot fewer increases!

The Government RIPS US OFF DAILY and has been for many years, taxing us to death for their own selfish wants !!!!!!!
Taxes are not legal by any means. IRS is not even a legitimate company, only one born of GREED by the wealthy !!
Thats exactly why I will NOT buy land in this country !!!!!!!!
I told everyone long ago, if we all stop working across the USA for a couple of months, THEN those Shmucks would LISTEN to us, and do the TAXES OUR WAY !!
You shouldnt have to be taxed so heavily, hell NO !!

Hmm, I miss the logic here. IF you are paying "the rest of your life", then in fact, you have gotten a LOAN from someone. Unless you paid cash, you don't own it in the first place.
As for the concept of taxes... sure. Let's have another Boston Tea party, refuse to pay ANY taxes. Hell, we don't need them thar schools, roads, hospitals etc that they are shoving down our throats.

Why buy land if you can't pay the taxes? You do have the choice. Don't do it knowing the consequences, and them blame the government.

Yeah, the taxation-thing really is a bite. Now, what about those poor folks that bought land without mineral rights. ABC Drilling shows up on their doorstep one Saturday and says, "We're sucking all the oil from under your house and refilling the hole with salt water....okey dokey, thanks a mil." Now that's crap!
