Start with a good, relatively inexpensive acoustic like a Seagull to get the fingers toughened up and to learn the basics (chords, techniques, etc.).
After you play an acoustic for a while, you'll be amazed at how easy it is to play an electric!
Also, do NOT get advice, or buy from "Guitar Center". Those boneheads wouldn't know a good guitar if it bit 'em on the ****.
Instead, go to a good, local music shop where people actually care about the music and care about their customers. Good luck!

Fender Starcaster. its a starter kit and it comes with a Starcaster (which is technically a Stratocaster) an amp, a guitar strap, picks, an instructional dvd, a pack of strings and a gig bag. the whole package is like no more than $200, which is pretty good. i got mine at Costco and i love it :) click on the bottom link to see the guitar. good luck finding a guitar and rock on!
