the godess your are talking about is Nike which means victory , and was the godess that ancient greeks believed that brought victory on any matter. The story you are talking about is the battle of Marathon, between Greeks and Persians. This battle took place the year 490 b.c in Marathon a site placed 43 km east from Athens. The young Athenean soldier named Fidipides was the man that run this distance to bring to the Atheneans the happy message of victory upon the Persians. The news were so important because the battle was significant and the Atheneans had little chance o victory as the were outnumbered by the Persians. So Fidipides run with all his strenght and when he reached Athens he shouted ''nenikikamen'' which means we won and died! From this story was the modern marathon inspired as an idea.
